What's Next is a 12-song country album about growing up without ever really feeling grown up. Across songs about young love, heartbreak, bad decisions, marriage, loss, faith and nostalgia, Will Finley looks at the people and moments that shape a life - and how quickly one chapter turns into the next.
The title track follows that idea from getting a driver's license and wondering what comes after college, through marriage, children, an empty nest and ultimately mortality. Elsewhere, “21 Twice” longs for another shot at youth, “Used to Be” and “Living in My Speakers” explore grief and the ways people live on after they're gone, while songs like “Blame It on the Night,” “Bad Habits,” “Baby Don't” and “Zero to Break Up” capture the mistakes and relationships made along the way.
The album balances those heavier moments with the escapism of “Better on the Water,” the devotion of “Prove You Right,” and closes with “Afterlife," a song about finally finding someone who makes forever feel real.
At its core, What's Next is about time: wanting it to speed up when you're young, wishing you could slow it down when you're older, and learning to appreciate where you are before life moves on to whatever comes next.
